About the SMC Archives

 

The SMC Archives provides access to the history of Santa Monica College through documents, images, artifacts, and other resources that are collected by the college. The resources in the Archives are representative of the academic, administrative, and community efforts of the college ranging back to its beginnings in 1929. 

 

Student Handbook 1954

 

Santa Monica college was formally established as the Santa Monica Junior College in September of 1929. The first sessions were held in a few upstairs rooms of the old buildings of Santa Monica High School at Seventh and Michigan Avenues. This first year had a total enrollment of 151 students and 7 faculty members. In 1932, the college moved to the former site of Garfield Elementary School across Michigan Avenue.  In 1948, Corsair Field, the college stadium at Sixteenth and Pearl Streets was dedicated as the first structure on the present day forty-acre site of the campus with 1952 marking the official move of the campus.
